Fashion Blog: Europe Edition

I have one word for you: tights. Alright, I have a few more than that, but in Europe this season, everything revolves around tights. Girls are wearing everything from pencil skirts to denim shorts with tights. And not your standard Wolfords either (although I wouldn't knock 'em if you got it like that). Tights this season are coming in every color and print, being worn with every kind of shoe (although I prefer a scrunched up mid-calf variety) and in all matter of occasion, whether it be casual or night out on the town.

In addition, and I hate to say it because I anticipate a backlash, fur is another one of the chic-est accessories (no-longer) walking this season. In the trendiest cities' boutiques, they are wearing fur vests, faux of course, but even the flea markets of Amsterdam, Paris and the south of France are filled with vintage furs, displayed without shame.

Lastly, and this one does truly break my heart, puffy coats are back, and tackier than ever. They are no longer just functional, or simple, but adorned with ridiculous fur collars and in the worst cases, even bedazzeled. In a season where camel capelets dominated early on, to see outerwear veer off in such an unimaginative direction is liking seeing your ex with his gold-lame wearing new girlfriend. For those who love puffy coats, I'll just leave it there.

The Art of Successful Packing: Travel Wardrobe Necessities

It’s that time of year again, the time when adventure rears its lovely head! We all feel the urge to take a journey sometimes, whether it is a quick jaunt, a road trip across the country, or an expedition across the world. Traveling can be stressful for a variety of reasons. For a girl who desires practicality while craving style in her travel wardrobe, the balance can be difficult, but a fashionista can have both! Here is a list of the travel essentials composed to make your life a little easier while you take the world by storm:

1. Blazer— Stylish, practical and versatile, a good blazer is a must on a long expedition. When traveling extensively, it is inevitable that you will come across different climates. Layers are essential when traveling, and a great blazer pairs with practically anything! In addition, you’ll look fabulously put together even after a 12 hour flight.

2. Denim— There are many reasons that denim is vital travel apparel. It doesn’t wrinkle much, and even if it does, they tend to shake out after a few minutes of wear. They can be worn repeatedly without washing and sometimes they even look better on day two. Finally, they go with almost everything! I recommend a pair that isn’t too super-trendy, something with a darker wash, and with a straight leg so that you can wear it with ballet flats, flip flops, sneakers, or boots. Take one or two pairs with you if you are backpacking so you have a pair to wear on laundry days.

3. T-shirts— The #1 rule of travel… Pack light! Nothing is lighter than a t-shirt. You can bring at least 10 different t-shirts without weighing yourself down, and in all the colors that flatter your skin tone. Look for poly-blends in order to avoid wrinkles. I recommend mixing it up with some v-necks, crewnecks, long-sleeved, short-sleeved, sleeveless and tunic length, of course. And they will look great under that blazer, or with our next item…

4. Leggings— They’re chic, they’re light and they’re oh so comfortable! You kind find them in different weights, textures and colors, and they can basically be rolled up and shoved in the bottom of your pack, so they’re a nice complement to the heavy denim that you’ve already packed.

5. Boyfriend cardigan—It’s bulky, it’s warm and it can be worn with jeans or leggings, so it earns a place on the list of travel essentials. Less formal than a blazer, and far less fitted, this layering piece lends itself well to those trips where we ate a little too much of the local cuisine.

6. Accessories— If you are going to pack such basics, accessories are a must! Luckily, they’re light, so pick a side pocket in your pack or luggage, and stuff it full of costume jewelry. It will spice up any outfit! However, DO NOT take any jewelry of value, either monetary or sentimental. Things have a way of going missing when you travel, so do not take anything you can’t bear to lose.

7. Scarves— This goes hand in hand with accessories, but packing a few scarves will allow you to add a touch of style and warmth simultaneously. And because there are a million different ways to wear a scarf, whether it be in your hair, around your neck, or belted to look like a vest, you can shake up your style with just a few small pieces of fabric.

8. Khaki shorts— A great pair of khakis will serve you well for the hotter legs of your journey (no pun intended). They are a multitalented piece of apparel because the right pair can be dressed up with heels and a white t with a bright scarf or colorful statement necklace, or can be worn everyday with a pair of flip-flops. Plus, they are always cotton or a cotton/poly blend, and so many retailers are doing flirty, feminine versions this season that you will have no problem finding a comfortable pair that you will love to wear!

9. Shoes— This is the most important wardrobe decision a traveler can make. Shoes are heavy and do not pack easily. So it is important to consider your destination and the activities that you are planning to do while you are traveling. Are you planning to do a lot of sightseeing? Hiking and camping? Hotel hopping? These are all important considerations, but having a well worn pair of ballet flats will ensure that you can dress up an outfit if you plan to visit the churches of Europe, and still feel comfortable if you spend the rest of the trip visiting the attractions. If you know you plan to hike and camp, or to travel to Iceland in January, buy a great pair of hiking boots and break them in before you leave for your trip. You’ll be grateful that you did. Bringing a pair of flip-flops is always a good idea if you are traveling in the summer or to a tropical locale.

10. The LBD— It is heartbreaking to travel to the world’s most fashion forward cities without your entire wardrobe on hand, but somewhere between home and your second layover, you will regret bringing every adorable dress you own and start tossing them out of your pack to save your bruised shoulders. If you can only bring one article of clothing that you can wear to the hot new club opening in Milan or to stroll down the Champs Elysees in style, what is more crucial than the little black dress? Choose one that is neither too formal nor too casual, and you should be able to stretch that dress across the European continent (with the help of accessories, of course!).

11. Black slacks— One pair of black dress slacks will come in handy, I promise. Plus, they are light, so they shouldn’t add much weight to your luggage, but will add polish to any ensemble. You just never know when you may find yourself in need of a “dress for success” moment, even on vacation!

12. Fanny Pack— This item is last on the list because it is not necessarily a wardrobe necessity, but it is a necessity, nonetheless. The fanny pack we’re referring to is not the fluorescent bulky ones that your grandparents wear on their vacation to Florida! The kind that we’re referring to is slim, worn under your pants and keeps your important documents safe from pick pockets. These can be purchased most notably at an AAA location in your city, and they are meant to house your passport, your credit cards, ID and any cash you may be carrying. They are completely invisible under your pants and are an absolutely essential piece of travel apparel if you are traveling abroad!

**In addition: Don’t be afraid to shop on your trip! If you want to buy a great cable knit sweater in Amsterdam, and then find you don’t need it when you’re in Italy, ship it home. That way, you won’t have to lug it around, and you get to come home to some stylish souvenirs! The same applies to shoes. If you know you’re starting your journey in a cool or rugged destination, bring the boots, and then ship them home once you ship off for sunnier shores! You can always pick up a great pair of Birkenstock’s in Germany, or a cheap pair of flip-flops at a kiosk in Greece.

Unsung (Beauty) Heroes

Summer is upon us and every beauty magazine and major retailer is offering their summer beauty essentials. We are all guilty, for even yours truly has posted her summer necessities, but every list is relatively the same. They all seem to contain a moisturizer with a sunblock, a bronzer, a leave-in conditioner, and I am not arguing the virtue of any of these products. I have every one of them in my bathroom cabinet. However, I felt that some of the less glamorous items are being completely ignored by my esteemed colleagues. In turn, I have chosen to highlight some of the beauty essentials that no one is talking about, and best of all, they are important all year long! Don’t we love the items that take us through every season?

Irons—yes, I am talking about the device that smoothes the wrinkles out of your clothes. Summer is a season that demands breathable clothing. Cotton and linen, the fabrics of summer, are renowned for their inability to stay flawlessly smooth. And white summer dresses? With wrinkles? Tragedy! So having an iron on hand is essential, and following the ironing instructions on your garment’s tags—even more essential. Hey, there is a reason that nearly every hotel in the country has an iron in their closets… it is a small, but important, essential in looking summer-ready!

Primer—you know those girls whose make-up seems to look flawless even after being in the hot sun all day. Give credit to her primer. Many people are unfamiliar with this beauty essential, and it isn’t just a requirement in the summer. It should be used all year long. Primer is a powdery gel that is put on the skin prior to foundation, powder or concealer. It preps the skin and helps the make-up stay put through all kinds of weather. If you ask me, anything that will allow me to ignore my make-up all day is definitely an essential!

Water—I’ve said it once, or maybe twice, and I’ll say it again, nothing is more essential in the summer time than water. When people ask me how I keep my skin so fresh, it is always the same answer—water. In addition, 70% of perceived hunger is actually thirst, so instead of grabbing for the Pringles, grab a bottle of water. It has no calories, and I can guarantee, drinking water instead of soft drinks will result in a better bikini body by the end of summer… so start now!

Preparation H—it isn’t pretty, but it’s true… the hemorrhoid ointment shrinks swelling, and that includes the pesky swelling around your eyes that makes you look tired first thing in the morning. Dab a bit around your eyes carefully (it isn’t a good idea to get the ointment in your eyes) and wait for the swelling to decrease. It costs far less than those fancy eye creams that you buy at department stores, and it works just as well, if not better!

Baby oil—yet another beauty secret that will save our young, broke and fabulous fashionistas a pretty penny, baby oil is the best tool for removing make-up. And to think, you’ve been spending more on those expensive make-up removers!

Yogurt—both inside and out, yogurt is an essential part of any girl’s beauty repertoire. Eat low-fat Greek yogurt daily and you will be thinner, you will smell better, and you will be healthier on the inside. Put it on your face once a week for 20 minutes, maybe blended with a bit of grated cucumber, and you will be moisturized and glowing on the outside. How easy is that?!

Breaking News: Cougar Town Hit By A Reality Tornado

I am a staunch advocate for confidence. Nothing is more attractive than a woman who feels good about who she is, and what she possesses. However… There is confident, and then, there is classless. There are cougars, and then, there are car-wrecks. If you are more Dame Judy Dench than Lady Gaga, you should seriously be reconsidering whether or not your wardrobe is age appropriate. No matter how sure we are of ourselves, there are limits to what we should be allowed to wear, and since the government does not have the time to pass legislation about tube tops, we must step in to set some guidelines. If you are a self-described cougar, please, make these are your new guiding principles.

1. Midriffs not welcome—showing us your stomach is adorable when you’re fresh faced and 16 and look like you aren’t really trying to look promiscuous, but once you have stretch marks and a C-section scar, it is no longer quite as charming.

2. Catholic school rules now (re)apply—remember when you were in high school, and you were forced to wear skirts that were as least as long as your fingertips reached? Time to revisit the past. It is not as sexy as you think. You’re someone’s mother for daughter’s sake! Shouldn’t we expect the same standards of good conduct from you that your daughter’s high school expects from her?

3. Logo-less bottoms—there comes a point in your life when wearing a logo on your ass is no longer necessary. Let something else about you do the talking. No need for Rock & Republic to define your style. You have a career, a family, or your own fabulous personality to say everything that needs to be said about you!

4. “Hello, Kitty?”—you’re a cougar, not a kitten! So, please, pass that cute “Hello Kitty” t-shirt you couldn’t resist on to a more appropriate audience… like your niece. It is not appropriate to wear cartoon characters across your breasts… because you have breasts. Point made, and hopefully, taken.

5. Speaking of breasts...—Congratulations on the breast augmentation. Now put them away. We are all very happy for you. They stand at attention like never before. That doesn’t mean that they have to be displayed like portable trophies every time you leave the house.

6. Your underwear should be under there—showing your bra straps and God forbid, your underwear, is embarrassing. Not just for you, I am embarrassed! I can’t stop staring! Victoria’s Secret is out, and everyone is looking.

7. Tanorexia is a disease—and one of the symptoms is premature aging. That’s correct, you’re making yourself look far older than you are every time you step into that tanning booth. Think of all the money you could spend in future plastic surgery by NOT exposing yourself to all that UV. Think of all the Ed Hardy you could buy!

8. Speaking of Ed Hardy—ladies, if you are over 40 and you can still rock a super tight mini-dress, I applaud your efforts. I can jump off of the Brooklyn Bridge, but I’m going to refrain. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean that you should. As one of my male counterparts so eloquently commented recently, “keep the freak in the bedroom; don’t bring it to the bar.” My sentiments exactly.

Our Most Fashionable Summer Cocktails

It is the summer season and no season sparks our desire more to see and be seen. And it should be noted that while the perfect sundress is important when out for a sizzling summer night on the town, what is almost equally important is the drink we’re holding while we’re wearing it! It may seem oh-so-trivial, but the perfect cocktail can be a conversation starter, and you never know when the hot guy next to you needs an excuse to lean your way, and ask “what are you drinking?” Here are a few of the standouts…

•The Icepick—this one is old school for the classic Southern Belle fashionista. Vodka and iced tea sounds completely dull, but with the onslaught of new and exciting flavored vodkas, this classic has become completely revitalized. Like our grandmother’s vintage brooches, a new spin can turn something elderly into something extraordinary. My personal fave is Stoli Strasberi (that’s “strawberry” in laymen’s terms), but peach, raspberry or even blueberry flavored will do in a pinch. They’re refreshing, easy to drink, and you can request them, as I do, in a tall or a pint glass, ensuring that they take just a little longer to drink. Plus, using unsweetened iced tea as the mixer means that you avoid all those pesky mixer calories, and can save all of them for your liquor, and what girl doesn’t love that?

•The Mojito— most certainly for our “muy caliente” fashionistas, and one of the more controversial of the summer classics, but who doesn’t love a little scandal? . There is no clear origin of this invigorating rum concoction, but many bestow credit upon a feisty English pirate named Richard Drake, who frequented Cuba often. Whoever was ultimately responsible, this beverage is decidedly Cuban. Rum, muddled mint and sugar (simple syrup is the easiest and most efficient) and a splash of soda water is my most loved version.

•White Port with tonic—for the decidedly European fashionista. This effervescent summer treat is for the girl who loves white summer dresses, for there is no fear of stains! An added perk: it is lower in alcohol, so if one is a light drinker, they can enjoy with abandon…

•Sangria—for the adventurous fashionista who loves variety. Sangria is the most versatile cocktail on this list. Every mixologist seems to have a new and exciting twist! Traditionally, sangria is a wine “punch” that originated in Spain, and can be made with brandy, red or white wine, simple syrup or honey, and a assortment of fresh summer fruits. The best part? It is the best way to spice up your cellar’s cheapest and lousiest wine!

•The Gin Basil Smash—for the bohemian fashionista. Nothing screams earthy independence louder than the Gin Basil Smash. The cocktail has been claimed by Le Lion Bar de Paris in Hamburg, Germany, but it is popping up everywhere in the hands of women who seem to live by their own sets of rules. A dry gin muddled with simple syrup, lemon and fresh basil and served shaken and strained, straight up. What could be more decadently simplistic than that?

•The Caipirinha—for our worldly fashionista. The young woman who orders this drink is one who is well traveled, for it is easily the most obscure of our list. Hailing from Brazil, the Caipirinha is as difficult to attain as it is to pronounce, but if you come across it, you must be bold and sip slowly! Made from Cachaca, a rum-like liquor made from fermented sugarcane juice, fresh squeezed lime and simple syrup, this cocktail is uniquely South American. Close your eyes and you can almost smell the crisp sea air!

•Sparkling wine—for the sophisticated fashionista. Nothing is more fun in the sun than a flute of bubbly. Whether you enjoy a sweeter cocktail (prosecco or moscato d’asti are the right choice) or a dryer cocktail (cava or brut are sensational selections), sparking wine will suit any tastes. Throwing an intimate summer party? Buy a few different flavors of sorbet and a small ice cream scooper, and add a scoop to the flute before you pour over the sparkling. You’ll get a cold delicious glass of sparkling completely personalized to each guest, and you’ll look like the summer’s most fabulous and innovative hostess!

Top Ten Summer Essentials

1. Moisturizer— We’re young, we’re beautiful, we can’t imagine a day where we’ll wake up and the wrinkles around our eyes won’t just be there when we laugh- they’ll be there permanently. Unfortunately, time stands still for no fashionista. The best way to delay the inevitable is to moisturize. If you are unsure of which one to choose, look for one without oil and with SPF. Sun protection is important all year long, not just summer. In addition, don’t be distracted by expensive moisturizers, do your homework. Anyone can moisturize, even on a budget. My moisturizer: Oil of Olay for Sensitive Skin. Another suggestion: tinted moisturizer. No one wants to caked in makeup all summer, and tinted moisturizer makes your skin glow, and eliminates the need for heavy foundation.

2. Sunblock— I know that you want to look thin and sun-kissed this summer, but remember, do it slowly and safely. If you know you burn easily, use a high SPF and spend just a little bit of time in the sun each day. If you don’t burn easily, use a lower SPF and spend just a little bit of time in the sun each day. I’m not saying don’t spend the day at the pool or on the beach… just take some shade breaks!

3. Sunhat— Who doesn’t love season-specific accessories? Sunhats are fabulous because they protect your gorgeous face even when you aren’t thinking about the sun. And if you have the confidence to rock a giant sunhat, you’ll steal the show practically everywhere you go.

4. Beach bag— There are so many versions of totes out there, it makes a girl’s head spin. You can get one practically anywhere. I prefer Shopbop, but if you are on a budget, Target, H&M and Urban Outfitters all have great choices as well. Practically anything can serve as a beach bag, it simply must meet two important standards: it must be large because you have to be able to bring a day’s worth of versatility and it must be machine washable because sand is dirty! It also helps if it is colorful, because summer is meant to be fun!

5. Jumpers/Rompers— Why do I love! love! love! these trendy pieces? Because I don’t see them as a trend, but more of an emerging summer classic. What is better to throw on over a swimsuit and look perfectly ready for the country club/beach bar/restaurant? Throw a chunky necklace and some bejeweled thong sandals in your beach bag, and voila! An adorable ensemble that is easy and more exciting than a sundress.

6. Swimsuit— Duh. Of course, you need a swimsuit. But make sure that you spend as much time looking for this important piece as you do all of your other important closet staples. Ensure a great fit, and that the colors and patterns are great for your pre-tan body. It is essential that when you’re as exposed as you are in a swimsuit, you feel your most confident, so find a suit that makes you feel your best.

7. Flip-flops— Again, this seems so self-explanatory, but there are so many adorable sandals on the market this season, that I suggest buying one pair that will last you a lifetime and a few pairs of cheap ones… I suggest Urban Outfitters, Target, and Old Navy for the cheap ones. For the investment pair, decide the purpose and your personality before you buy. Are you a girly girl? Buy a pair of Tory Burch from Shopbop, Nordstrom’s or Saks. They’re trendy in a classic way, and they go with practically everything summery. Are you a more active girl? Buy a pair of Rainbows or Birkenstock’s. They are comfortable, will last a lifetime, and once you break them in, they’ll become your favorite shoes!

8. Chapstick— Okay, I’ll admit, I’m addicted. But all biases aside, most Chapsticks have SPF, and remember ladies, your lips can burn, too!

9. Cheap sunglasses— I understand the desire to buy some super cute Chanel shades to rock on the beach this summer. Nothing is more fun that seeing a beach full of girls green with envy at the sight of your super expensive and exclusive shades- until you sit on them. Or lose them in the ocean. Or toss down your beach bag and crush them. I have done all of these things. And I will admit, I am a terrible eyewear caretaker, but for summer, when you wear them day in and day out, go cheap. I suggest the convenience store on the highway to the beach. Or, if you are more of a poolside lounger, Wetseal always has incredible summer deals on sunglasses. Not only are they cheap, but they are almost always buy-one-get-one-free! That way when you destroy one pair, you have a back-up pair ready to go!

10. Water bottle— I started the list with hydration, and I’m ending it with hydration. Because when the temperature is high, you sweat, and when you sweat, you dehydrate. There is nothing that will make you look worse than dehydration. You know the way you look after a long night of drinking? Well, that is dehydration baby. Nothing else. Find an adorable water bottle, and drink water constantly! It will keep you looking fresh through all of your summer activities.

Wardrobe Essential: The White Button-Up

Many designers have tried, some have succeeded and some have failed, but nearly all have designed some version of the classic man's button up white shirt. My opinion: go with the original, the men's version. Gap offers a great version in nearly every season, and because of rampant consumerism, you can find a Gap in nearly every major city in America! The more expensive versions made for women, the ones that are tailored and offer feminine details, are lovely, but they lack the versatility and often, the comfort, that we need in a wardrobe essential. Case in point:

Fall: Wear the classic men's version with a beautiful pair of tweed chocolate wide leg slacks, tucked in, with a chunky rust colored statement necklace... boots are lovely in the fall, and if you live in a moderate climate, you may want to fore go the knee-highs until it gets a bit colder.

Winter: Wear it with a pair of black slacks un-tucked, and belted at your natural waist with a wide patent belt. I like a pair of slacks with a bit of texture, but any nicely tailored pair will do, and high heels or boots are the right shoe decision.

Spring: Wear it with a fitted blazer and a great dark pair of skinny or straight leg jeans. Ankle booties are the right shoe if it is still cool outside, but thong sandals with some decorative detail will also look terrific, if you live in the warm warm South, like yours truly.

Summer: Wear it un-tucked with a few of the lower buttons undone (if you have a toned, tanned stomach) and a great pair of khaki shorts. This season, there are some fabulous shorts with really exciting details! And roll up the sleeves, kind of sloppy like, to 3/4 length. Pull your hair into a loose side bun with some loose hair hanging out or some fabulous earrings if your hair is too short for an up-do... If you want to go out on the town, pair this casual look with a great pair of heels, and take sexy-casual to a new level...

Now that you know how to wear this classic piece in every season, there is no excuse not to have one in your closet...

Denim Do/Denim Don't

Denim do:

Do have a fitted, preferably dark denim jacket in your closet.

Denim don't:

Do NOT wear it with jeans! I don't understand why the mirror doesn't illustrate this point to people, but I have been seeing it a lot lately, and it simply has to stop.

Alternatives:

Wear the jacket with white pants, even white denim, khakis, cords, or a white skirt or dress.

Fashion sites that put me to shame!

We all want to be fashion leaders. But most of us are destined to be fashion followers. Even fashion bloggers are often inspired by someone else's genius, on a nearly daily basis. Don't be discouraged fashionistas! Many of the world's premier designers are themselves inspired by street style, by someone who had the nerve to dress the way they wanted to, not the way they were told to. And these innovators have inspired millions of people to, well, follow their lead! Ahhh, irony. Who inspires me? Well, at the risk of giving it away, I feel it is best to divulge to all of you some of my best kept secrets. I know these won't be secrets to all of you, but every time I meet people who still don't know about these sites, I find myself singing their praises. I will continue to offer these gems as time goes on, but these are the two that I suggest you start following right away! No time like the present...

#1-- Shopbop

Their lookbooks are ridiculous! You can shop by trend, price, color, and size, and they will send you daily e-mails telling you exactly what is on trend. In addition, if you are a fan of contemporary designers, you will eat your heart out at this site! They carry nearly every designer a girl aged 18-25 could dream of, and all the accessories to go with it.

#2-- Refinery 29

This site is literally like a dream come true. I thank the fashion gods on a daily basis for shining the light on this site. It provides a wealth of easy to read, quick tips for being fashion forward, all while suggesting a wide spectrum of retailers offering the trend being featured, at every price point. So unlike Shopbop, which we all know is not quite for the young, fabulous and broke (despite carrying the brand), Refinery 21 will show a girl on a budget how to follow the trends, and show a girl who has money burning a hole in her pocket where to blow all of her dough!

Completely neutral

There are so many advantages to neutrals that I don't even know where to begin! First and foremost, they are a hot spring trend, and we all love to be trendy. But even when they are not a trend, they are classic. This season, they are the best of both worlds! And although neutrals like taupe, khaki and camel seem to pair with just about everything, it is important to understand which neutrals work best for you, or you could find yourself in anything but neutral territory...

If you have a cool skin tone: wear taupes, or neutrals with gray or blue undertones. These will allow your skin to look its best, without looking washed out or sallow. If you think that you can't wear neutrals, it is because you have been wearing the wrong neutral...

If you have a warm skin tone: wear camels, or neutrals with brown or orange undertones. These will bring out the natural warmth of your skin, and summer is the best time to glow!

Neutrals can be worn with practically anything! Buy neutral pieces that are investment pieces, because they can be worn in practically any season, and never go out of style! They look especially pretty this season with laces, florals, and sheer white or cream tops.

Movin on up/Tailor made

Shopping a great sale can be frustrating. After all, if you are an avid shopper like me, you'll spend hours picking through a sales rack looking for any semblance of a great purchase. Stores like Bebe, Express, United Colors of Benetton and Urban Outfitters will have these obscene sales! I'm talking about 50%, 60% and 70% off here! This can translate to saving more than you spend (ahhhhh, I love that)! But small boutiques, fashion forward stores and stores geared towards a younger market all have the same sales dilemma. Everything that is left is either an extra small, or an extra large. The extreme sizes, they're all that's left. The world's biggest catastrophe (dramatic? me? noooooo....) is finding the most adorable top, and it is a size large when you are a size small.

Most people just walk away when something isn't their size. I don't have it in me to do so. Especially if I am staring at a $60 top for $18. I can't, the sale is too irresistible. Now if the top is too small, I let it go. It is dangerous to fill your closet with clothes that you swear you will wear once you drop those last 5 pounds. But if it is too large, you have still struck gold! Many people who have never sewn have a difficult time seeing the potential of a garment that is too big for them. There is nothing wrong with that, sizes were invented for a reason. In the course of the Industrial Revolution, once Europe was finished making steel and other useless items, they moved on to more important things... MASS PRODUCING FASHION! And with this, came standardized sizes. Before this, people had clothes made specifically for them, or they made them themselves. Call me (very) old-fashioned, but I like the idea of having clothes made to my exact proportions. And this, dear friends, is why I have nearly everything tailored. And if I find it on sale, one size too big, the better. So do not be afraid to move up a size on apparel that you find on sale. Even if you have it tailored, best bet, you'll still save $$ in the end.

Disclaimer: Certain items, and certain fabrics, are somewhat immune to this rule of thumb. For example, I would not recommend this with sweaters (or should I saw knits in general) or silks (because it is silk, and silk is precious!). IN ADDITION, when seeking out a quality tailor, it is best to shop around, read reviews and seek out your city's "Best of" recipients, and invest the time (and some well worn pieces of apparel that mean little to nothing to you) to find the right tailor. Take a few old pairs of pants or a dress that your grandmother bought you and you shoved to the back of closet, and take them to your short list of tailors to ensure that they listen well to your instructions and return the garments to you in good condition. I have a great tailor, and found them on the first try, but I have heard horror stories. It is better to lose an old dress then the one you are wearing in your sister's wedding in two weeks. Don't take chances with important apparel!

Earth Day meets everyday....

One day of the year, we celebrate our life sustaining PLANET. You know the place that we live, the place that provides us food, the essential mix of the appropriate gases in the atmosphere that keep us breathing, not to mention the source of (through a degree or two of separation) silk, cotton, wool, CASHMERE (ahhhhhh) and linen. Yes, folks, I'm talking natural fabrics. Even synthetics, like polyester, are made from petroleum which yes, Mother Earth has provided us. It's unfortunate that the miraculous and unappreciated Mother Earth gets one day of celebration, in the same vein as April Fool's Day and Valentine's Day, but who am I to judge?

Let's face it, we all take her for granted. She is lambasted any time she causes us inconvenience, but we are unwilling to give up our Range Rovers until gas prices go through the roof, and we must decide, mortgage payment or fancy SUV?

Fashion is no kinder to Mother Earth. We use and abuse our clothes and throw them away, not considering how much of that shirt was made with materials that came directly from the ground. Fashion is by it's very definition wasteful.

In light of Earth Day, I am throwing out into the universe some tips for taking it a little easier on the old girl while still looking fabulous.

Tip #1: Shop consignment or thrift. It is actually fun ladies! And while the idea of wearing some stranger's clothes has always given me a little shiver, that is why washing machines were invented. Well, sort of. Take an afternoon, scope out a few consignment shops, and while you're there, take some of your own gently used but completely played out duds for a fellow fashionista to find. It's a cliche, I know, but one woman's trash really is another woman's favorite new pair of jeans.

Tip #2: Shop green! It isn't just for cars and food anymore. The green revolution is taking over fashion, and actually has been for quite a while. A few designers/manufacturers that are attempting to make "green" apparel (and I don't mean the color):
*Mocuin
*Osbourne Design
*Beau Soleil
*Loomstate
*G-Shock
*Organic by John Patrick
*Popomomo
*Cocolico
*Dagmar
*Bllack Noir
*Provo
*People Tree
*Praire Underground

Tip #3: Invest in classic and basic clothes that will last! Constantly buying new trendy clothes that you are only going to throw out in a season is fun, but utterly wasteful. Spend good money on the clothes that never really go out of style (suits, denim, basic t's and sweaters, slacks) and DONATE the trendy stuff to Goodwill. You may not want to wear something because it is out of style, but not everyone is a fashion innovator, or can afford to be choosy.

Tip #4: Make your own apparel. I can't believe that I am even typing this because sewing class made me cry on more than one occasion, but if you have the patience and the desire to do sew, do it! You can channel your inner designer, make clothes perfectly suited to your figure, and make all the little adjustments to the clothes that you would LOVE if only.... Plus, a lot of fabric stores, especially online (I <3 Fabric.com) sell organic fabrics. Wow, maybe I should reconsider pulling out the old sewing machine? Nahhhhh...

For the birds....

Are you a trend-setter? Or a classic a la Audrey? It's rare, but on occasion, you can be both simultaneously! One of this season's hot trends--birds! Which I love, and I'm going to tell you why. Every spring, the powers that be in the fashion world tout florals as the hot spring trend. It is not a trend when every manufacturer and designer rolls out some semblance of florals EVERY SPRING (sorry, H&M, but calling it "The Garden Collection" ain't foolin anybody!). So whether it be a light scarf with a simple bird print, or a completely over the top bird embellished tunic top, you can be super-fly in this season's innovative trend... I know, it was more like a super-pun, but I couldn't resist.

Black & Blue

Ok, I am an equal opportunity blogger, so I am directing this post towards both sexes...

This issue of black being worn with navy is my #1 pet peeve. Although I thought that this issue was cleared up with the invention of the wheel, apparently, some people missed the bus.

This one's for the boys: Black is appropriate AS AN ACCESSORY, most notably, a shoe, with navy suits. In fact, it is the best bet, unless you have some very dark brown, Italian leather shoes that are too powerful and sexy to resist.

All my ladies: Never wear black & navy blue separates, such as a navy sweater with black pants or skirts. Please. I am begging you. I promise, despite what your best friend (who should be fired) or your mother (who is biologically obligated to love you) may say, it does not look good. Now, there is an exception in the form of denim, but it better be denim, don't try to sneak some navy cords past me. Just because they have rivets, this doesn't make them denim.

Color me confused: There are several shades of blue, so I am not saying that no shade of blue will pair with black, but be careful. When it comes to dark shades of blue, I'm a proponent of pairing white. It's so nautical and Jackie O! Take into consideration your skin tone: If you are a "cool" skin-tone, go with inky, dark navys. If you are a "warm" skin-tone, go with bright navys. If you are having trouble identifying the difference between the navys, your local fabric store can be your best friend. Just do a little side by side. We've all become experts at comparison. We've been comparing current boyfriends to ex-boyfriends for years, so comparing fabric will be a breeze.

Rock your body: If you are busty, but tiny on the bottom (Dolly Parton style), wear the navy or dark blue shirt, and white or light colored pants. If you have a little bit of junk in your trunk (J.Lo style) avoid the white pants, and go for the white top. Wear the navy in a pant or skirt. It will balance your figure.

On a separate note: this is just one fashionista's opinion, but be careful when choosing navy suits as a woman. First and foremost, navy conveys a friendliness that works well for men in a business atmosphere, but can undermine a woman's ability to be powerful or aggressive in the workplace. Great perhaps for the interview, not so much for the promotion. In addition, navy suits, if you have your heart set on one, should be an investment. Black hides everything, but navy, it can look cheap if it is cheap. So consider this when building your professional wardrobe. I have a great pair of navy slacks, and I often pair them with a light colored cashmere sweater.

Introduction

Hello! I am a Fashion Merchandising graduate who is starting my own image consulting firm. It's a very difficult business convincing people that they need someone to tell them what to wear, but as we all know, fashion does not come naturally to all. It does not even come naturally to most. And I, dear readers, am not immune. Before I went to Fashion school, I made a few missteps myself. Some would claim that I still do, but what is fashion without a little risk taking? Can I cure the world of bad taste? Probably not... although, a girl can dream. So if you are one of those who think you have it all together, read this blog, and laugh with me. If you are one of those who has no idea, treat these posts like one of those "blah blah blah for Dummies" books... as a light-hearted, back to basics guide to fashion-- the way your mother should have taught you, if she hadn't grown up in the disco era or the decade of leggings and lace.

Disclaimer: Read this post with a glass of champagne, for I will likely be writing it with one, and it will be easier if we are all on the same page!
